Critical Investigation/Linked Production

Critical Investigation/Linked Production
·         How accurately are ethnic minorities portrayed in horror films/programmes and are these representations present across other genres of film/programmes.

Texts that I will look at:
o   Dead Set
o   Daybreakers
o   Saw 3D
o   Dog House
o   The Final Destination

·         Linked Production is to produce a scene from a horror film and challenge all the stereotypes which are shown in the majority of horror films that I have studied.

Media Language – I’m looking at horror films which normally used low key, and back lighting often to create silhouettes to create a sinister atmosphere. They are most likely to have action sequences and chase sequences.
Institutions – I plan to look at both big budget Hollywood films and British independent films which give me a range of sources to collect form.
Genre – Horror films
Representation – Main aim of this investigation is to look at how ethnic minorities are portrayed in horror films and is these representations are present across other genres.
Audience – The target audience for horror films are usually targeted at an audience of males and females aged 16 – 27 who are mainstreamers of followers.
Ideologies – Do the ideologies in horror films reflect their views of ethnic minorities?
Narrative – Most horror films have the same linear narrative; Equilibrium > Disruption > Realisation > Attempt to repair > New Equilibrium.

Social – Have the representations of ethnic minorities in horror films influenced the opinions of society.
Historical – When did these representations emerge in horror films?
Economical – Horror films are always changes to keep up with a huge demand for it.
Political – Have political influences encouraged these stereotypes to be shown.
